A “Brand” New Edition of Erdnase

Since The Expert at the Card Table was published in 1902, there have been over 50 editions. It has been translated into various languages and transcribed by the brightest minds. It is the greatest book on card technique ever written and likewise, the most studied. Its contents are just as relative today as they were over 100 years ago.

In the June 2010 issue of MAGIC magazine, John Lovick writes that Erdnase “inspires religious fervor and pilgrim-like devotion from its disciples”, which is to say the least for serious students. It has indeed become a devotional vade mecum with new insight and inspiration gained with every read. Many magicians have spent their life studying the book. Dai Vernon, a master of close-up magic, left us all with his wonderful annotations in Revelation, giving many of the methods a modern approach.

Erdnase will always have its devout scholars, but lately it’s become more of a trend. We think this started a few years ago when the Conjuring Arts Research Center released its Bible edition, a pocket sized version in which you won’t find a card man without. This year, we saw the release of a custom deck of cards paying tribute to Erdnase, and there is even talk now of an Erdnase convention. It is clear Erdnase is no longer just shorthand for the author’s famous work, but also a brand representing serious students and professionals of sleight of hand card technique.

Adding to the brand is a beautiful reproduction of the original 1902 publication. On the outside, it’s a perfect facsimile, however, leaf through the pages and you’ll discover an empty canvas for new ideas. This isn’t just another edition, but as John Lovick writes, “a journal in which to coalesce your card-centric thoughts.” Although you won’t find a description for the Bottom Deal, or the S.W.E. Shift, as all the text has been removed, the publisher has left all 101 drawings by M.D. Smith in their respective positions. Some might say this will get in the way, but we think it’s a simple reminder of what this journal is for. Although if you have kids, it makes for the greatest coloring book ever!

Erdnase aficionado’s will be delighted with this new homage to The Expert at the Card Table and be eager to fill its pages with everything from annotations to new ideas. We can’t wait to fill ours.

Gibecière: A Journal on Magic’s History

Since the first issue came off the press in 2005 we have been avid subscribers to Gibecière, a biannual journal on the history and preservation of magic published by The Conjuring Arts Research Center and edited by Stephen Minch (author and publisher of some of magic’s most prolific books).

We are pleased to be the only other source to offer this journal to those who find joy in reading about the history of magic. With contributions from Bill Kalush, Ricky Jay, Mike Caveney, Martin Gardner, and Juan Tamariz to name a few, we don’t recommend passing this opportunity up.

As a young magician just starting out I remember buying Mathematics, Magic and Mystery from the local bookstore only to quickly learn every trick within days. The effects and puzzles within are extremely easy yet impossibly effective. Apart from this book, I know very little about Martin Gardner, other than what’s on Wikipedia.

Several years ago a good friend loaned Dave and I his copy of The Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic, another book by Martin Gardner which is now long out of print. For nearly 12 hours we went through every page – all 600 – thoroughly marking it up with yellow sticky notes. We look forward to the refined edition of this book with commentaries by Michael Weber to arrive later this year.

Sorcerers Safari Summer Magic Camp 2010

We are very pleased to announce we have been selected as this years Special Guests for Ontario, Canada’s Sorcerers Safari Magic Camp. We are so excited about this and honored to have been invited. It’s the one event we’re most looking forward to this year.

We’ve heard so many wonderful things about camp from our friend Lee Asher and are absolutely thrilled to be apart of it. Simply put, we can’t wait!

We’re mostly looking forward to all the sessioning. We love teaching magic and jamming out new ideas and what better place than with a group of enthusiastic young magicians. Last year, everyone received a special gift from Dan and I, well, this year expect no less – although this time we deliver in person.

Interview Magazine: David Blaine

Interview magazine has a great piece with David Blaine as interviewed by Adam Kimmel. Discussed is his involvement with the fashion designer and a scary stunt performed underwater in the middle of the ocean surrounded by great white sharks they collaborated on. Kimmel then asks Blaine about his next public stunt and if he has a “fantasy endurance test”. My favorite part of the interview though is a story Blaine tells about his experience performing magic for the burn victims at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. It really puts magic into perspective and reminds us of the emotional impact and healing power our art can achieve and as Blaine closes, “Things like that visit remind you of what is important and what matters.”

I am so busy with my FTT(Final Theory Test).Finally passed the FTT so i wont be so busy already.

I got my Dan and Dave v4 Green Edition Deck already.What shocked me was Dan and Dave actually signed a deck for me.It is amazing but one of the signature the pen is like kind of run out of ink.

And i also bought Paul Wilson's C3 it is really an amazing trick i performed in class the reaction i get is amazing i seen people freak out saying something like "it is scary".I trick is easy but i looks complicated and it is really fun to performed outside and most of all it can be done by borrowed deck of cards.The tricks looks like it has a set-up it does not.It is a must get trick.The best trick i performed.

He held a borrowed soda bottle in his hands, and on his command, it completely collapsed. In the days that followed, I learned that that artist was Eric Ross, and the effect was CRUSH.

In the months that followed, our creative team - led by Dan White - worked closely with Eric in refinement of what we believe looks like a true miracle. Over the past several weeks, we've released a series of teasers hinting at it, and tonight we can confirm it. CRUSH is coming.

The Most Amazing Weekend of My Life

I still can’t believe Magic-Con actually happened. It was the most amazing weekend of my life and one I will never forget.

Even though I was running around the whole time and hardly had a moment to say hello, I was able to meet some incredible people. A couple that stand out are Mahdi Gilbert and Steffan Banta. Between the two of them, I have never felt so inspired in my life. Mahdi, who has no hands, has looked past the impossible and mastered some of the most difficult sleights ever published. Steffan Banta continued to show me what Magic-Con promotes: passion for the art. The sparkle in his eyes and the hundred high-fives he must have given me throughout the conference was always a boost of energy and for that I thank him. At only 10 years old and already performing half my repertoire, I know we’ll be hearing more from this kid in the future.

I’d like to thank everyone for believing in Magic-Con. It really could not have happened without your support and we thank you for giving us a chance. We hope to see all of you who attended next year, as well as those who couldn’t, and we will do our very best to make it ever better.

The Visconti-Sforza tarot deck is a 15th century Tarot deck and one of the oldest known to exist. It had a significant impact on the visual composition, card numbering and interpretation of modern decks.

Overview

The surviving cards are of particular historical interest because of the beauty and detail of the design, which was often executed in precious materials and often reproduce members of the Sforza and Visconti families in period garments and settings. Consequently, the cards also offer a glimpse of nobiliar life in Milan, which the two families called home since the XIII century. When commissioned by Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan, and by his successor Francesco Sforza, the cards were still known as Trionfi (i.e. trump) cards, and used for everyday playing.

The decks

The name "Visconti-Sforza tarot" is used collectively to refer to incomplete sets of approximately 15 decks, now located in various museums, libraries, and private collections around the world. No complete deck has survived; rather, some collections boast a few face cards, while some consist of a single card.

At this very moment both Daniel Garica and Paul Harris (producer) are reviewing the DVDs for final approval before heading to press. A teaser will be posted shortly.

In a nutshell: Surely, you’ve had your chance to get a few decks of Arcane playing cards. Now, we want to see what you do with them. Hit the mall, the boardwalk, the park, anywhere there are spectators, and blow some minds with either a black or white deck. Or use both. It’s your routine. Our judges will pick the best video based on creativity, skill, presentation and audience reaction. Here’s the rules:

Only one video per person. If there is any appearance of multiple submissions from the same person, the videos will not be judged.
Vid must be no longer than four minutes. Handy tip: TIME YOUR ROUTINE BEFORE PERFORMING.
Your performance must be for at least one genuine spectator.
Your performance may include any trick or effect that utilizes playing cards, and those cards must be from a deck of Arcanes.
Creativity is encouraged. Use the glyphs or the smoky face cards as part of your routine.
Your video may include any kind of editing, but your trick or routine must be uncut.
Submit your videos in the Member Videos forum with the words “Arcane Contest” somewhere in the title.
All videos must meet our submission guidelines. Any videos that do not will not be judged. NO EXCEPTIONS. THIS IS YOUR ONLY WARNING.

Exclusive Q&A Session - Mike Jacobson

Last week, we posted an Artist Diary from a rising star in the magic circle - Mike Jacobson. On a recent episode of the Ellen DeGeneres show, Mike was randomly chosen from the crowd to perform for Ellen, the studio audience, and the viewers at home... and blew everyone away! We sat down with Mike to pick his brain and ask him a few questions:

Q: How did you get started in magic? How long have you been performing?
A: When I was about nine, I saw a magician at camp where I grew up in Los Angeles. After the show, he showed us all how to do a trick - specifically, how to pull a rope through your neck. In theory this was really cool. In practice, it was not. But I performed this trick for every single adult I knew and they all acted really impressed. Were they? Probably not. But I loved the excitement of knowing something that adults, who told me what to do every day, had no idea how to do... and I didn’t have to tell them. All in all, I’ve been into magic for about 14 years or so, but I’ve only been performing at a semi-professional level since I became a member of the Magic Castle (about 10 years or so).

Q: We know you only by the little we've seen in performance clips online. Do you perform professionally?
A: Magic is really just a passion of mine. I love to entertain and just make people happy. So right now it’s a side job and it looks like it’ll stay that way. I’m also a strategist at an awesome advertising agency in LA called 72andSunny. As a strategist I basically do what we do in magic on a larger scale - figure out how people think, figure out how to engage them most effectively, then use it to our advantage during our campaigns so we can actually affect people. I love it. Having magic and advertising in my life is really fun. If one ever gets frustrating, I have the other.

Q: What led to your appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show? You were randomly chosen from the audience - what does that process consist of?
A: Basically they have everyone in the audience write their hidden talents on paper before the show and if anyone is good they’ll bring them up. In my case, they knew they wanted a magician on the show - so let’s just say I was prepared.

Q: Any funny, behind the scenes stories you can share from the taping of the show?
A: I shared a dressing room with one of the Thunder From Down Under guys. Yeah... awesome. It was literally for like five minutes and he was actually super cool. It was funny to get an insider perspective on that world - it’s way more legit than we think. Then, we compared our six-packs and stuff... you know how that goes.

Q: Any words of advice for those just starting out in magic or looking to continue their journey?
A: I think more than learning cool tricks, it's WAY more important to focus on entertaining and making people happy. In reality, that's the goal of us performing. A lot of magicians get caught up in technicalities and doing things that impress rather than engage, but I think it's extremely important to do more than just magic - we need to help bring the party. I do magic because I love to help people have an awesome time.

How do you do that? By making your magic relate to people, so it becomes less like a magician performing for laymen and more like a hilarious conversation with an entertaining friend; that allows people to enjoy themselves a lot more. I think that's the key. Making sure that whatever you presentation is, it's actually relevant to the audience in some way. When you do that, you bring people in, they let their guard down, and you receive better reactions.

Q: You are clearly confident in your performance. What is in Mike Jacobson's future? How can we support your magic?
A: I think the confidence comes more from my trust in that, if something screws up, I’ll be okay. I like people and Ellen is honestly just another person and a joy to perform to - she loves magic and is so genuine, which made me feel comfortable. I am working on my own project for beginners.i am testing the video editing and rendering the rendering is fine and is not wide screen i am working on it for the pass few month recently like yesterday i found a youtube video that help me a lot so i tried and it works fine just only it is not wide screen i try it on my tv and it is great to have HD in it.

Last year we were approached by fashion giant Christopher Wicks’ clothing company English Laundry to incorporate our unique style of magic and card flourishes into a fresh new video that would showcase their brand. The end result is spectacular and to our knowledge, something that has never been done both in the fashion and magic industries. The video, directed by Silas Howard and Ben Peyser of Standard Quality, was shot with a Red camera on location at the Global Rebels warehouse. It incorporates a clever special effect that required us to wear green body suites and be filmed performing flourishes against a green screen.

Prior, another video was shot, by us, for display during their exhibit at the 2009 MAGIC show in Las Vegas. Both these videos, along with a special surprise, will be revealed this Friday only on dananddave.com.

I am going to make a video tutorial called "Pinky Count".
Is a very neat double lift where you don't have to use both hands to get a break.

I got Carousel by Irving Quant here is the review.

Teaching: Irving goes through the trick in detail, and then runs through it again as a recap. Another thing to note is that the trick is split up into steps to make it easier to follow. Overall very good teaching.

Video quality: As has become expected by the On Demands the quality is very good and can easily manage full screen and still be clear.

Sleights: In the description it says 'no sleight of hand.. almost', and they weren't kidding: there is only a small amount of sleight of hand involved in the first part of the trick, but nothing that would challenge the intermediate magician.

Setup: None, you just start with the four kings and aces on top of the deck... Simple. Please note this trick is ungimmicked.

Angles: You could easily have people sitting in a semi-circle around the table and be angle safe, but not behind you. Good, practical angles.

Overall: Highly recommended, and worth the money. Great for people who like working at tables and generally anybody who likes highly visual magic.

Finally got my Window by David Stone dvd.that not what i expected.the dvd is really crap there is no talking and and there is like no history about the trick expert detail of the move and the gimmick they also dont show us how to take out the gimmick carefully from the package all they write in a peice of paper will do..the dvd is crap the whole dvd i dont think last about half an hour.and they stuff the gimmick in the dvd and there is no plastic or anything and a sticker stick on the place where you open the casing..the only thing is the gimmick the gimmick is really great it looks simple but it looks great..very clever idea.

and for my tutorial i am so sorry these few days is quite busy.cant spent some time to video and video it good than learn some new video editing skills and the tutorial..i almost recover from my sick than feel tired easily..sorry for that guys hope you don t run away from this site..

now i am waiting for my jerry nugget deck.

Some good news went to Starbucks today and video the last part of it.I have decided to perform the trick live so stay tune for it so the trick will look even nicer than i alone performing to myself.it is kind of weird..i am learning how to remove unwanted noise..so stay tune..
